Bartolomeu Dias, also spelled Bartholomew Diaz, was a Portuguese route-finder whose discovery of the Cape of Good Hope in 1488 showed Europeans there was a feasible route around the storm-driven southern tip of Africa. Early information about Dias's journey is restricted since all the actual reports of his journey perished when the castle that they were housed in burnt down after the Lisbon earthquake of 1755.
